The Queen, Atlanta\u2019s icon DJ Debbie Graham playing Dennis Ferrer\u2019s featuring Mia Tuttavilla \u201cTouch The Sky<\/a>\u201d (7th Star Vocal Mix) blows the roof off Pisces, formerly the Sound Table on Edgewood Blvd in the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood, one block away from the King Center on the most bitter night of this cold-hearted year.\u00a0 After all this is MLK Day. When Atlanta loves to party rock.\u00a0 As various promoters will throw multiple engagements on the same night. Eight pm has arrived and it\u2019s time to party with purpose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As you enter the remodeled brick and mortar and stand underneath white bullhorn speakers, you find the dance floor is warmed and brimming with love. Look around, there are more women dancing to Dennis Ferrer\u2019s \u201cP To Da J<\/a>\u201d than not.\u00a0 This floor is your refuge, a sanctuary from the outside apocalypse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

See the smiles, hear the laughter, feel the joy.\u00a0 There is no trouble in the room.\u00a0 Except for the fog machine that is anatomized by Pisces\u2019s owner, Ree de la Vega as Marlon D\u2019s \u201cJesus Creates Sound<\/a>\u201d (Main Mix) plays-the soulful sounds these young kids are keeping alive! \u201cI love you dancing,\u201d says a Queen crowned with long braids twirling in the air as her denim hugged hips sways with the spirit of dance that lives at a Mood To Move gathering.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mood To Move<\/a> is an anomaly.\u00a0 More than a mere party, the movement is stomping across Houston to Atlanta and beyond.\u00a0 Founded in 2022, by Espee, the one-man pioneer is now a burgeoning collective, mtm is juvenile but acts with aged authenticity.\u00a0 Take this event\u2019s curated narrative-an all women of color line-up. There is hope after all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Women Do It Better<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Atlantans, Ash Lauryn to Alexis Cursh\u00e9 have played Mood to Move, as tonight\u2019s must-see headliner, DJ Minx<\/a> from Detroit will play in the open-window booth.\u00a0 Where Jamaica born DJ Debbie Graham\u2019s open-arm embrace transfers selector duties to a younger woman of Afro-Caribbean descent. Be careful not to mistake her oval eyes and girl next door vibe for the late pop princess-Aaliyah Haughton.\u00a0 Born Chalane Bauzo, she is AKA the other A-An\u00f3nima.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A heavy four-count jolts the heart. As a low hum slaps the air.\u00a0 Snares hiss as hi-hats clash. The build up of stuttering drums from the classic Roland TR-808 throws back to early 90\u2019s garage. Folks, the room\u2019s temperature can\u2019t get any hotter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It does. \u201cIt\u2019s 100 degrees up in here,\u201d you yell to DJ Deb over Floorplan\u2019s \u201cWe Magnify His Name<\/a>\u201d that pulls arms into the air and makes hands clap. Booman\u2019s \u201cGod\u2019s Got It<\/a>\u201d (DJ Spen & Troy Morton ReWork) puts the sanctified and brings the Holy Ghost to Monday night church. Kenny Bobien\u2019s \u201cLet Me Show You<\/a>\u201d (DJ Spen Mix) is the classic that Kai Alc\u00e9 dropped at MJQ\u2019s Adult Skate the previous night. And what is a service without playing the Baltimore native who tore up a barely there crowd at Eagle Atlanta last night-Karizma\u2019s \u201cWork It Out?\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Gem after gem. Assurance after assurance. An\u00f3nima delivers an uplifting sermon of hope. But how is it that you have never heard of the Atlanta resident? And why is she not playing amongst the coveted selectors the city has to offer? And why is she not being introduced to new audiences?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Real talk.\u00a0 The best parties are where the young people are.\u00a0 A new collective of diggers and selectors are on an upward trajectory.\u00a0 After all, they will not be ignored. Their time is now.\u00a0 And the elder gatekeepers of deep & soulful house music must face the music.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Facing the Music<\/span><\/p>\n

To the elders.\u00a0 House music did not begin with you.\u00a0 To the elders.\u00a0 House music does not die with you.\u00a0 To everyone.\u00a0 House music is much larger than any one man or woman, house music is movement, a movement that will live on with or without us.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The willingness to ensure that deep soulful house music is sustainable is threefold through mentorship, support, and self-expression.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The novice are looking to be <\/span>mentored<\/span><\/i>. To be taught by the masters is an honor.\u00a0 To hone their skills in time-honored tradition is to keep the quality of craft alive, and its essence alive.\u00a0 Elder states people can <\/span>support<\/span><\/i> their apprentices by attending their mentee\u2019s events or by inviting their apprentice to play at said mentor\u2019s events.\u00a0 No ego.\u00a0 The attitude of embracing and accepting and allowing new music selectors to interpret their style through creative <\/span>self-expressio<\/span><\/i>n is vital to growth. Everyone must be intentional in maintaining intergenerational spaces that are inclusive and safe for all.\u00a0 Audiences must cross-pollinate. The youngsters dancing alongside the veterans who teach dance floor etiquette, the language of movement and the love of music will further enhance the cause. Real talk. You can\u2019t fault, if you haven\u2019t taught.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Look around the premises to be mind-blown, there are no cellphones.\u00a0 These youthful visages are not glued to glowing screens of gambling, gaming or social media apps. Wow!\u00a0 People are lost in the groove.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And these kids are singing! \u201cDon\u2019t you ever give up<\/a>, cause you\u2019re gonna make it.\u201d Vocalist Melonie Daniels croons on the Innervision classic-the Frankie Feliciano Ricanstruction Vocal. The sound and sight is a tearjerker.<\/span><\/p>\n

There Is Hope<\/span><\/p>\n

This year the King Holiday has greater significance, as nine days later, a letter will circumnavigate the Pentagon pausing King and other diversity celebrations.\u00a0 As Dr. MLK vowed to keep infinite hope alive, we have to do the same.\u00a0 We must keep infinite hope not only for the music-but for the culture, the community, and the content. The time is now, more than ever, the party people must continue to fight for diversity, equality and inclusion.\u00a0 We must fight for the marginalized, the oppressed and those without representation in our dance communities.\u00a0 Women must continue to wage war. Tonight is war!\u00a0 And to everyone, \u201cdon\u2019t you ever give up, cause you\u2019re gonna make it.\u201d\u00a0 After all, house music is hope.<\/span><\/p>\n
