Your thoughts lost on the whereabouts of the discreet venue.\u00a0 <\/span>As the minutes inch closer to the said time, an uncomfortable emptiness is felt. A general admission ticket purchased online reads location: TBA.\u00a0 <\/span>Trust is treated with caution. But life is an adventure. Right? \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Later, early morning, in East Los Angeles, where censored<\/del>\u00a0street meets the dark night.\u00a0 <\/span>There sits a Castle Grayskull, an imposing menace of painted fiery walls and gray slab.\u00a0 <\/span>Within its teeth of gates, there appears a dungeon? Warehouse? Multi-purpose space?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWho are you here to see?\u201d A face of dermal fillers, stretched eyes, with platypus lips asks. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cRobert Hood.\u201d You respond as a chilly gust of wind hits your head.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAh.\u201d The stranger pleasantly replies. \u201cDaddy Techno.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

These days, influencers are booking Detroit\u2019s vanguards faster than people can get into one of the two green Porta-Potties placed in the open space vestibule. \u201cExcuse me.\u201d You say trying to step over shoes.\u00a0 <\/span>While thinking of Washington D.C.\u2019s Hast du Feuer to Atlanta\u2019s Alleycat to L.A.\u2019s Minimal Effort-all are keeping Detroit Techno alive and Black.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Akin to entering deep into the bowels of the venue.\u00a0 <\/span>There the darkness pumps the pulse.\u00a0 <\/span>Strobes and speaker stacks.\u00a0 <\/span>Aligned against white walls aglow red.\u00a0 <\/span>Peeping over snapbacks, shoulders and tousled bobs.\u00a0 <\/span>Can anyone see the music selector?\u00a0 <\/span>There is no elevated platform to ogle the sound selector.\u00a0 <\/span>Yet, all the ravers face forward.\u00a0 <\/span>Their hand held phones<\/span> filming the red.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

At fifteen minutes to one, two figures stroll together. The taller grips the shorter\u2019s hand as if protection from walking in the valley of death.\u00a0 <\/span>Both wear black. They appear as shadows before disappearing into a glowing orange room.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thirty minutes pass as a deejay beats acid, techno, and the craze of the moment, hardgroove.\u00a0 <\/span>That bounces off walls as the acoustics sound a bit hollow.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Welcome to Into the Woods<\/a>. The premier boutique event and music label for techno purists bridging the gap between Detroit and the City of Angels. The collective has thrown underground raves since before the pandemic. Hosting such luminaries as Theo Parrish to DJ Minx and the late great Mike Huckaby. Tonight\u2019s Official Movement Detroit Pre-Party is the hottest ticket for those who like raw techno from the city with the greatest talent-Detroit.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Look around, dance spaces are multi-tiered. Front and center are those who stand and stare.\u00a0 <\/span>In the mid are the roamers.\u00a0 <\/span>The peripheral is for the outliers. Those few elders and millennials who understand their purpose to atten&DANCE.\u00a0 <\/span>Their fingers snap, shoulders pop, and sneakers glide as if wearing over-starched garments.\u00a0 <\/span>Into the Woods is no different with one eerie exception. Everyone wears the same skin color. Red. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

From the stage lighting positioned adjacent the deejay station where the music comes to a slow halt. A rousing cheer levels the atmosphere. Before the room goes green for the headlining act.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the first \u201contz\u201d kicks louder into existence. The sound is weighty, heavier and amplified.\u00a0 <\/span>His feet slide across the smooth concrete.\u00a0 <\/span>His body creates the energy.\u00a0 <\/span>Soon, you too begin to tap, snap and swivel.\u00a0 <\/span>The energy of the dance invites.\u00a0 <\/span>Where movement and energy collides. This is the apex of purpose. His moving inspires your movements. Little does he know.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Alex Preston\u2019s \u201cHunching<\/a>\u201d is a fire starter.\u00a0 <\/span>The disco\/house bangs with intention.\u00a0 <\/span>A rapid boil of toms, snares, and highs simmering to a percolating crescendo.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Suddenly, figures draped in coats, jackets and one guy swallowed in the most oversized sweatshirt spill into the main room like water bugs scurrying indoors from the cold. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Slade’s \u201cGet Over U<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>The perfect ending to a most telling narrative where music is ministry.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
