Walk a block pass the open air parking structure as the ontz expands in the atmosphere.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Juxtaposed against the skyline of high rises, onward forward lies the destination.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>A folding table and portable fence where your mobile ticket is scanned.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Grab a smiley face wristband.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Say hi to security.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Enter. Tents. Vendors. Lounge chaises. Restrooms?<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Behold the center piece of the event.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>That is not the surrounding professional lighting towers, nor the arena-sized sound gear but an aerodynamic aluminum mobile trailer titled Rock The Disco Soundsystem.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Coachella eat your fucking heart out.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Standing around with dear friends the conversation shifts to how people are making the decision to no longer attend parties.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>And how spending $45 and over for events is, well forget it.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>One person notes how they only attend events that are free. As another person brags they will hop on any given airline and fly hours to see their favorite deejays\/shejays spin. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

When the thig-a-tee thump from beating percussions resonates and the synth warp pulls you into the expanse. There a young girl dances with her loving father.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>The aged thirty plus party girls bounce about and wave their weaves.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>The elders with eyes closed are caught in the groove.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>The twenty bodies sweating are as diverse as entertaining to watch. A true testament of house music that draws generations to move to Quentin Harris featuring Cordell McClary\u2019s \u201cTraveling.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

At the intersection where \u201cTraveling\u201d meets \u201cInspiration,\u201d there is Captain of Revery #3, Matt Siliman showing off his Sunday\u2019s best: dance moves.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>The Kerri Chandler featuring Arnold Jarvis tune, the music selector\u2019s anthem as of late, brings additional movers and shakers to the yard.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>The space is warmed against the blowing breeze and gathered clouds. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But the surprise is hearing the late Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin singing \u201cOh, Mary don\u2019t you weep\u201d on Grand High Priest\u2019s \u201cMary, Mary.\u201d And another surprise is seeing the King arrive.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Who is rushed passed one expensive bottle of bubbly and into the side door of the trailer after a quick photo session with lucky patrons. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In the open-faced airstream, stands Atlanta\u2019s own Kai Alc\u00e9 delivering some heavy funk and groove be C+C Music Factory featuring Deborah Bond\u2019\u2019s \u201cPride (A Deeper Love)\u201d (Underground Club Mix).<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>The NDATL founder\u2019s phone is cuffed between his right ear and shoulder.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>His posture is assuming as unassuming the high-fashion black jacket pattern with vibrant green leafs and brilliant red flowers he wears.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>\u201cGET IT KAI,\u201d voices yell.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Before his high-powered musical journey closes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Louie Vega<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Familiar horns.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Filtered.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Bass.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Reverb.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>\u201cDeeper.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>A little bit deeper,\u201d a voice croons repeatedly.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>That all builds to a climatic refrain before exploding into beats and boom!<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Grab your dance partner who wears open-toe flat sandals to a Louie Vega party!<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Who does that?<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Latin soul makes dancing feet salsa and meringue on a tepid Sunday in late April.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Louie opens with the track he closed with a week earlier on Sunday in Dallas, Domo Domo\u2019s \u201c<\/span>Happening In The Streets<\/a><\/span>.\u201d <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Where content creators swarm to capture the perfect cultural vibe. Oh how we have become a dance floor of cellphones. Everyone has a story to livestream. The new art of storytelling.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>That used to be an art form.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>However, these days everyone has a reel.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Driven by smartphones to Pioneer CDJs, a mixing board, and MPC.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou keep on living and don\u2019t you dare die,\u201d preaches the late Queen of Clubland, Loleatta Holloway.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>\u201cMy Loleatta\u201d (Dish apella) flutters into the stratocumulus.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>But Louie has tricks.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>His production tricks.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>He drops a heavy four-on-the-floor, handclaps, a low hum that explodes into Sunday service at Underground ATL. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Yep, that Underground Atlanta. Sigh.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>The once famed property has had more lives than your cat(s). Retail. Restaurants. Nightclubs. Yep. The Underground has been there and done it all. Yet, the Underground has to find its current success. Is it, again, a nightlife district? Art galleries?<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Nail salons?<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Or all three?<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Only time and money will tell its fate.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Though mad props to the Captains of Revery for securing the historic locale for their historic event.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Once more, dancers are bent over.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Torso dancing.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Their Sunday shoutin\u2019 to 3 Winans Brothers featuring The Clark Sisters\u2019 \u201c<\/span>Dance<\/a><\/span>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>The Louie Vega Latin Soul Version smooths into lush piano keys, shakers, and jazz. <\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>The sultry vocals starring Monique Bingham on Vega\u2019s \u201c<\/span>Elevator (Going Up)<\/a><\/span>\u201d (Dance Ritual Dub) electrifies.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>A dance circle opens as the dance scientist bops, weaves and kicks on Ron Hall\u2019s \u201c<\/span>Talk to God \u2018Bout It<\/a><\/span>\u201d (Spen\u2019s Sunday Service Re Edit).<\/span><\/p>\n

Two weeks later, March 23, 2020, came and went with no seeing your friends, no dancing with your friends, no seeing Kai Alc\u00e9, and definitely no sight of Louie Vega playing live anywhere in the city.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Instead a global pandemic hit.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>The event was postponed. Then entirely canceled.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Ticket monies were reimbursed to all.<\/span>\u00a0 Protests. \u00a0Bullet holes. \u00a0<\/span><\/span>The club closed.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>All in one year, all hope was lost.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Until 3 year later.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>April 23, 2023<\/span><\/p>\n

Post pandemic the city\u2019s underground house music movement lie on life support.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Gone are city venues that once hosted soulful house music\u2019s community and culture.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Skyrocket rents, gentriFUCKation, and COVID all but killed the scene.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>However, a handful of dutiful promoters and deejays\/shejays are throwing DIY events in unlikely locales.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>The blueprint is the Captains of Revery, Kieran, Mike, and Matt, their mobile DJ airstream travels to various recreational green spaces across the city.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>That allows the party people to get down.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Open air and intimate.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
