\u201cHow long does it take to get a damn bottled water?\u201d The bartenders dressed in shoulder less black halters are wearing black masks. By 2 pm, people are tripping over, slightly inebriated, or buzzed from Moscow Mules or whatever trendy libations are du jour. You\u2019ve waited so long at the bar that you start a conversation with a lady wearing micro braids.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s the wait about?\u201d She asks over Akabu featuring Ovasoul7\u2019s \u201c<\/span>Raw Love<\/a><\/span>\u201d (Joey Negro Club Mix).<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Pockets of prime real estate appear. As the crowd thins.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>That allows you to spin around and two-step adjacent the libation station as you wait and wait and wait.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Eyeing the servers inching away, further south the rectangle bar.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>All you want is a bottled water. <\/span> <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Last Dance<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I died and saw the lovely archangel welcoming me at the pearly gates to MJQ Concourse.  <\/span>I got my wings tonight. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Inhale.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Breathe deeply the cool crisp air into the lungs.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Exhaling slowly.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Beneath a clear and starry dark sky, your sneakers kick rocks.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Upward the sloping pavement where Beamers and Benzes cruise by.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>The wooden flanked smoke shop and Tattoo Ink parlor are in view.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>The shack.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Parked vehicles.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Across the street from that green liquor store.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>All urban landmarks.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>The thought of this parking lot being much else is hokum.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s that there?\u201d <\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s MJQ.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOh, they playing disco.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Three young bruthas wearing flattops are chattering aloof.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Their retro footwear crisscrossing through eleven souls deep waiting in a snaking queue to be hand-searched, bag checked and ID approved. <\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cElectronic ticket?\u201d <\/span>The first ever in Adult Skate\u2019<\/i><\/span>s <\/span>fourteen year history.<\/i><\/span> <\/span><\/i><\/span> \u201cOr if paying in cash, have cash ready in hand,\u201d announces the venue\u2019s eternal gatekeeper. <\/span>   <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Enter the belly of the beast.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Dark.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Dank.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>And very red.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Wait!<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>The space is this packed? <\/span>Already<\/i><\/span>?<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Witness the scores of black bodies.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Feel the heat escaping from their being.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>The speaking of their love language through movement to lyrics singing \u201cI Want to Rock With You.\u201d<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Yep, it\u2019s going to be one of those nights.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Let\u2019s go!<\/span><\/p>\n

Welcome to Adult Skate.  Where roller skates are not required.  The annual tradition begins the Sunday night and dances into the early morning hours of The Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Junior’s holiday.  A time when the city is too busy partying at MJQ Concourse.  <\/span><\/p>\n

Where onstage, is the action.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Where the painted mural of dancers and roller skater backdrops the music\u2019s epicenter.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>There, <\/span>Kai Alc\u00e9<\/a><\/span> drips.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>White oversized eye frames.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>An ash \u201cATL\u201d sweatshirt.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>A red trapper hat stamped with the letter \u201cD.\u201d<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Marvel the many logo tees dotting the room. #icameheretodancewithyou.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>WuTang.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>And MJQ Concourse.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Smile for a selfie alongside Alc\u00e9 the music selector\/fashionisto playing Nina Simone\u2019s \u201cI Put A Spell On You\u201d (E.O.L Soulfrito Remix).<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>HD cameras record the kinetic energy bursting from triple spins and feet shuffling in a cropped circle to Atlanta’s own The Dangerfeel Newbies\u2019 \u201c<\/span>What Am I Here For<\/a><\/span>?\u201d (NDATL Distinctive Vocal Remix).<\/span>  Next,<\/span><\/span> Swedish sensation Snoh Aalegra\u2019s GRAMMY nominated \u201cDo 4 Love,\u201d <\/span>her Bobby Caldwell cover,<\/i><\/span> commands a sea of chorus. \u201cYou tried everything, but you don\u2019t give up.\u201d<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>That has Mr. NDATL waving his hands and Sunday shoutin\u2019 in the DJ booth.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>The view is priceless.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Laughter is heard.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Hearty hugs are exchanged.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Dabs and handshakes abound.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>All to the soundtrack of Jill Scott\u2019s \u201cHe Loves Me (Lyzell in E Flat)\u201d a white label version that has people singing and dancing with each other.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>The scene now resembling more a family reunion than bidding a bittersweet adieu.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSynthesizer Sequencer Psychedelic<\/span> <\/span><\/span>Acid House\u201d reads the Nike shirt stuck to his svelte frame.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>DJ Kemit takes rein of the musical journey.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>The former Arrested Development deejay stands, surrounded by a dozen or so greying heads, receded hairlines, braided locs and snapbacks having their own separate VIP party in the DJ booth. Where the pulse of the drums clocks at 123 beats per minute.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>When Chic\u2019s \u201cDance, Dance, Dance, (Yowsah, Yosah, Yosah) \u201d fades into disco delight of orchestra strings and lowly bass, into the fore comes Carl Bean\u2019s \u201c<\/span>I Was Born This Way<\/a><\/span>\u201d (Moplen Dub 2). Onstage, out come the merengue giro, cowbell and cabasa!<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Two Soul Sisters and Mr. Tambourine are shaking, and striking in eurythmic.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>The collective provides the most impressive visual to Kerri Chandler\u2019s \u201c<\/span>The Calling<\/a><\/span>\u201d [Club Qui].<\/span><\/p>\n

Anyone for Sunkids featuring Chance\u2019s \u201c<\/span>Rescue Me<\/a><\/span>” (MAW Magic Session Mix)?<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Suddenly the vibeologist is grabbed from behind. A woman adorned in white knit bows her head into the small of the deejay\u2019s back and dances from behind.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Kemit\u2019s wife is lost in the groove.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Sunday church arrives!<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Courtesy \u201c<\/span>Jesus Is A House Song<\/a><\/span>.\u201d<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Atlanta\u2019s Kemit and Luke Austin AKA The Lounge Lizard\u2019s bootlegs continue with the Yolanda Adams vocal stellar \u201c<\/span>We Still Rise<\/a><\/span>\u201d and their stunning edit of The Jackson 5\u2019s \u201cI Wanna Be Where You Are.\u201d \u201cOoohh.\u201d<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>\u201cYou Better Werk!\u201d it to Norma Jean Bell\u2019s \u201cI\u2019m the Baddest Bitch\u201d (Moodymann Mix), shuffle and side-step to Blaze\u2019s \u201c<\/span>Lovelee Dae<\/a><\/span>,\u201d farmer to Dajae\u2019s \u201c<\/span>U Got Me Up<\/a><\/span>\u201d (Danny Tenaglia\u2019s Club Version) but when you hear the refrain \u201cI Need Relief!\u201d falling from the heavens.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Dancers pull out their Sunday best for The Sounds of Blackness\u2019 \u201cThe Pressure\u201d (U.B.P. Classic Club Mix).<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Quickly, the millennials take over the dance circle.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Their finger waves.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Their arm rolls.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Their torso pouncing in quick jabs.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Their pearly whites beaming bright.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>And yo, when that trumpet solo drops, a near baby mosh pit forms. <\/span>  <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Voque arms.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Duck walk.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>And a death drop to the concrete on the Saint Louis soulster Osunlade\u2019s \u201c<\/span>Idiosyncracy<\/a><\/span>,\u201d an Adult Skate-MLK anthem.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Missing thus far is any soundbite from Dr. King himself.<\/span>  Instead<\/span><\/span>, the crowd is treated to the lyrical stylings from Brooklyn’s Tony Touch\u2019s \u201c<\/span>Apaga La Luz<\/a><\/span>.\u201d<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>The Pablo Fierro Raw Mix ignites before the cool down from Louie Vega and Josh Milan AKA Two Soul Fusion\u2019s \u201c<\/span>Joy Universal<\/a><\/span>\u201d (Extended). <\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

More Than A Party<\/span><\/p>\n

Gather for perhaps the final time, reads the digital post on all socials from Adult Skate\u2019s founder DJ Cullen Cole.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>The time has arrived to say goodbye to The Modern Jazz Quartet Concourse at 723 Ponce De Leon.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>MJQ<\/a><\/span> brought the party down the street and underground to its second location on Ponce twenty-six years earlier.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>The year 1997 looked much different.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Atlanta\u2019s Beltline was not a thing.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Ponce City Market, a retail afterthought.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>And forget about Chipotle.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>The late 90\u2019s famed Atlanta\u2019s peak party era. When night clubs ruled. From Buckhead to Midtown, Atlantans knew how to party. And people partied hard.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>A summit of debauchery.  That MJQ led over other establishments.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>When Deep (Cullen Cole, Kai Alc\u00e9, DJ Kemit*) showed up at MJQ as a weekly Saturday night throwdown from 1997 to 2006.* The deep house\/deep disco gathering became legend.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>MJQ became Atlanta\u2019s Warehouse (Chicago), Atlanta\u2019s Paradise Garage (NYC), and Atlanta\u2019s Studio 54 (NYC).<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Everyone who is anyone entered the mouth of the cave.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Dallas Austin. Janet Jackson. Outkast.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Madonna.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Techno titans graced the ones and twos within its bowel. Kerri Chandler. Kelly K-Hand.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Ron Trent. <\/span>  <\/span><\/span>\u201cYou should go to where the dancers are-MJQ.\u201d<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>A woman, aged twenty-something living in suburbia told me when I first moved to the city in 2003. MJQ was name dropped like a former President\u2019s social media accounts. Over two decades later, there you spot the movements of capoeira around the \u201cpole\u201d in the room.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>While reading online rumors predicting, \u201cThe venue\u2019s demise.\u201d<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Half-truths of untruths.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>MJQ will move onward. Forward to new digs, addressed owners Rayan Murphy and Ryan Purcell. With the former space bulldozed to make way for more, you guessed it-gentriFUCKation.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

@vinylsnobbery<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

How impressive for a DJ to possess the energy of yesteryear.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Cullen Cole dressed in red, with greying beard, does so. He throws back time to the year 1999.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>The energy. His vibe. Is giving. <\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo Requests Ya\u2019ll\u201d reads the red neon sign where underneath Cullen declares a \u201c<\/span>Love Revolution<\/a><\/span>.\u201d The Mysterious People classic is timely.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>The Mood II Swing Remix 2 is a choppy if unsteady affair.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Where Yogi, @granolagirl with sweat rag in hand, spins around in a corner before bolting for the exit.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>The crowd thins. That leaves vacant real estate to dance between the bar and bathroom. Where the air feels degrees cooler and smells fresher. Grab your dance partner @deeeebo_x.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>When Cullen surprises with Leee John\u2019s \u201cMighty Power of Love.\u201d  Listen to the audio, crisp and clear that eschews from overhead hanging sound ware.  Feel the swing, when the eight notes are played in threes.  When the drums gallop and the snares hiss.  Witness the brilliance.  The Mood II Swing Vox Mix has Generation Z dancing alongside Generation X, blacks, whites and every hue in between rejoicing.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Proves the mighty power of music. <\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And dance!<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>People come from all over to get down at MJQ.<\/span>  Big shout outs to Christy traveling from Seattle and Marcia traveling from Charlotte.  <\/span><\/span>There is @djdocramadhan providing entertainment for dilated pupils and cheering spectators. Fitness influencer, @sistasoukey popping her shoulders and locking her knees as her torso dips low. @aj.dance gliding into the men\u2019s room of all urinals.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Don\u2019t judge, a dancer needs space to twirl, two-step and high-kick to Lil Louis’ \u201cFable\u201d (The Director\u2019s Cut Classic Club).<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Detroit’s Terrence Parker’s \u201c<\/span>Love\u2019s Got Me High<\/a><\/span>\u201d has the baddies and zaddies grooving.  Mother Ward with Andrew Jacksons pinned to her blouse, poses for \u201cEveryone\u2019s Favorite Photographer.\u201d Mother Gaines is seated on leather plush for one last time.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>As @ChefNoah passes out business cards for his restaurant as you wait for a bottled water at the bar.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYaasssss!\u201d<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>Your dance partner screams, abandoning you, running ever closer to the sound booth to praise Kentphonik\u2019s \u201c<\/span>Sunday Showers<\/a><\/span>.\u201d  That is a whole vibe.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>All before the house lights slowly shine brighter, Cullen the self-proclaimed @vinylsnobberry ends his all vinyl excursion, the last dance, playing one final question in song.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>\u201cDo U Luv Me?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The thirty or so heads left standing on the floor, bow, cheer, clap and plie to the Lil Louis & The World\u2019s anthem. <\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYassss!<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>We <\/span>\u2764\ufe0f<\/span> you Cullen and MJQ.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span>You owe us nothing.\u201d <\/span>   <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
