\u201cActually, you\u2019re thinking of the \u201cdrum\u201d crowd that doesn\u2019t smoke when they dance here.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cMade In Detroit\u201d tees, plaid shirts and black-rimmed specs canvas the room.\u00a0 College students fist pump adjacent parents: sparse faces of ecru and olive dot among vast pallid visages.\u00a0 Behind a black column, a bearded hipster sets his glass of liquor on the floor.\u00a0 Underneath the smoky haze and pulsating strobe lights that leaves the floor green, a sea of pearly white pupils stare at a stage.\u00a0 Missing are electric guitars, live drums kits, synths and a hairy mop with plucked lips screaming into a microphone.\u00a0 Instead two CD players, a mixer and equalizer are the instruments of choice.\u00a0 Behind the arsenal stands a figure-tall, dark, and dressed in black.\u00a0 He is who everyone in attendance is ready to experience.\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

A four-on-the-floor thumps at full volume before disappearing into the dark.\u00a0 Warm pads springs to life.\u00a0 Like the prodigal son, classic house comes leaping home.\u00a0 Many appear, by the lack of fist pumps, to be vaguely familiar.\u00a0 Only the dancing is fully engaged.\u00a0 Time travels back to baggy pants and PLURs: the bygone years of Generation X\u2019s rave soundtrack.\u00a0 If classic chords beckon feet to move, warm vocals commands mouths to sing,\u00a0 \u201cYour Love.\u201d\u00a0 Mouths mimic lyrics, as to say, if memory serves correctly, I used to know every word to this track.\u00a0 The legendary DJ opens his musical mantra with his back catalog that proves he shines with the great. \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Lest you are unfamiliar and fail to understand the significance, let us dust off the pages of techno music\u2019s biography.\u00a0 \u00a0Kevin Saunderson was born, and up to age 9 bred in Brooklyn, NY.\u00a0 His family then traded sights of the Brooklyn Bridge for the Ambassador Bridge having moved west, Midwest, to suburbia Detroit.\u00a0 Kevin\u2019s high school years proved pivotal as he connected with music enthusiasts Juan Atkins and Derek May without knowing they would soon craft the blueprint for an underground movement.\u00a0 After a short stint as a college football player, Kevin departed sports to pursue his love music.\u00a0 Thus, he became an in-demand DJ who traveled the world.\u00a0 The label imprint KMS-Kevin Maurice Saunderson-established him as a burgeoning music producer of a distinguished electronic camp.\u00a0 It was his group, Inner City that created a cult following with vocal techno \u201cBig Fun\u201d and \u201cGood Life\u201d fame. Fast forward to present day, Kevin Saunderson is revered as one of the founding fathers, pioneers and pillars of techno music.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Kiddie-corner the room the bald DJ stands hunched over shiny hardware.\u00a0 His black tee brushes against knobs and faders.\u00a0 His fingers flip CDs, press buttons, and slides switches in a single take. The maestro preps to deliver his best scenario: a repertoire of genre-defining sounds. Deep house sojourns on The Journeymen\u2019s \u201cClose to Me<\/a>\u201d, deep tech on Culoe De Song\u2019s \u201cY.O.U.D.<\/a>,\u201d vocal house croons, \u201cI Need You\u201d that stirs the crowd to realize they need Kevin Saunderson just as much, Andrez \u201cBased On A True Story<\/a>\u201d (Dub Mix) stomps across the cement floor, \u201cChicago\u201d that Northside funky house sound causes bodies to writhe in jackin\u2019 jolts, \u201cDetroit,\u201d Kevin\u2019s hood, as in Detroit Techno plays at 135 BPMs and higher as Ovenous & Atjazz\u2019s \u201cSoldiers<\/a>\u201d speaks over marching drums.\u00a0 Kevin takes a step back.\u00a0 He beams a blinding smile.\u00a0 He is having too much fun.\u00a0 His stacked frame sways from left to right to his mental metronome. \u00a0Suddenly the sounds of recognizable synths sweep the soundscape.\u00a0 It\u2019s the song that made Kevin and Inner City household names \u201cGood Life<\/a>,\u201d (Techno Mix) a worthy dose of tech-soul that closes out the set.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Scores of hands ripple the air as a body triple spins and jump upwards.\u00a0 Not one soul is musically immune to bouts of satisfaction.\u00a0 This is the music that beckons discerning electronic music lovers journey from Florida and Tennessee.\u00a0 Local neo-technoites<\/i>\u00a0and EDM enthusiasts were schooled on the humble beginnings of a global massive front.\u00a0 The fifty-years young DJ educated the crowd.\u00a0 In return he receives a heartfelt dancing ovation with thundering handclaps.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Meanwhile the drink that the bearded hipster previously set on the ground falls sideways on the cement.\u00a0 Pieces of sharp glass swim everywhere.\u00a0 Aw great, a sticky dance floor.\u00a0 Damn, no one thought to bring the baby powder.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
