A hefty bear hug is exchanged between the two music buddies.\u00a0 The DJ transition goes smooth and so much unannounced.\u00a0 Onstage stands a full-haired man working the musical hardware. He appears far younger than his age.\u00a0 A closer inspection reveals fine wrinkles that spread like branches of life from his eyes.\u00a0 He has charm, a jovial wit that radiates as bright as his smile.\u00a0 House legend number two takes aim.\u00a0 He appears ready to please.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Heavy-charged techno thumps are exchanged for hissing snares of sexy house meant to inspire more lounging than fist pumping.\u00a0 Five-minutes later, sensuality is shattered by divas wailing boldly over bouncing keys.\u00a0 The instantly recognizable Todd Terry featuring Jocelyn Brown and Martha Walsh\u2019s classic makes mouths sing \u201cKeep On Jumpin\u2019.\u201d\u00a0 As the hook plays the bottoms drop and the big room sound floods the dance floor.\u00a0 Never has the crowd heard the song played with emphasis.\u00a0 The classics continue on Meli’sa Morgan\u2019s \u201cStill In Love With You\u201d (MAW Mix) that brings out house dancers not previously noticed during the party.\u00a0 With one armed out stretched and the other arm folded behind her head, she vogues as her dance partner squat walks around her.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Four months earlier, a defining shift occurred in the city\u2019s underground party scene.\u00a0 A global-acclaimed DJ debuted his Phutur3 party, named after his late 1980\u2019s Phuture guise.\u00a0 The monthly series set to showcase local and global DJ talent.\u00a0 The party proved an underground alternative to the god-complex DJ that rules mainstream nightlife culture, and has since drawn a steady stream of growing faithful supporters of the afro-acid movement.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

For<\/span> those familiar with acid house, DJ Pierre springs to mind.\u00a0 After all, he is considered one of the patriarchs of acid house.\u00a0 Pierre\u2019s origin began in the Windy City where as a young child his attention shifted from repairing electronics to studying music.\u00a0 During the mid 1980\u2019s, when Chicago had as many house\/techno DJs as churches on street corners, Pierre followed suit and became a fixture playing warehouse parties. From there he tried his luck at producing and remixing songs.\u00a0 His luck paid off on the critically acclaimed \u201cAcid Tracks\u201d that led him to working at Strictly Rhythm records in NYC for fifteen years before relocating to the dirty south for family matters.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cLook at the stage.\u201d\u00a0 Another former Chicago DJ points out.\u00a0 A vast array of rumps shakes and swings onstage.\u00a0 Smartphones capture selfies as smiles shine for group photos.\u00a0 \u201cHate to burst their bubble but this ain\u2019t no Boiler Room broadcast.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0DJ Pierre continues to put the P-in-the-air.\u00a0 If house music ever had a subgenre called P-Funk DJ Pierre would be god.\u00a0 \u201cNever, Never, Never\u2026\u2026\u2026\u201d squeals a high-pitched soprano at the top of her lungs.\u00a0 The man-of-the-hour warps the vocals and grinds out a gospel dub of Floorplan AKA Robert Hood\u2019s \u201cNever Grow Old,<\/a> that takes the dancers to chucccch.\u00a0 Hoots and hollers spew from the mouths of babes. \u00a0Cue Robert Owen\u2019s \u201cI\u2019ll Be Your Friend<\/a>\u201d that gets grimy.\u00a0 Eddie Amador\u2019s \u201cHouse Music<\/a>\u201d receives a down and dirty remix that drops knees to the floor.\u00a0 The legendary producer\/remixer is not done yet.\u00a0 He pulls out the big guns on \u201cBig Fun<\/a>\u201d from the party\u2019s predecessor Kevin Saunderson.\u00a0 The sounds of programmable drums, Roland TR-808\u2019s, hover over the crowd like buzzing helicopters.\u00a0 Spitfire splatters of drums rapidly assault the dancers like military soldiers spraying tear gas at Ferguson protestors.\u00a0 \u201cAcid\u2026Breathe In, Breathe In\u201d a lowly voice whispers into ears of dancers dripping beads of sweat. Perspiration becomes an accessory that drapes the neck and chest.\u00a0\u00a0 As the music intensifies so does the room\u2019s thermostat. \u201cTime for an adult beverage,\u201d notes one drenched dancer.\u00a0 Only the bar can keep frantic pace with the music.\u00a0 As Pierre drops hit after hit, bartenders pour drink after drink.\u00a0 Ringing cash registers sounds like extra instrumentation to the beat.\u00a0 The music goes edgy and darker with slashing synths and beefed-up BPMs.\u00a0 Hardcore acid.\u00a0\u00a0 Neo-techno\/EDM heads be schooled at how the 20th<\/sup> century paged today’s Electro and said, \u201cGive me back my beats.\u201d\u00a0 Yesterday\u2019s originators inspire today\u2019s generators as evidence on Osunlade\u2019s \u201cIdiosyncracy<\/a>,\u201d with its techy undertones and robotic overtones.\u00a0 Whopping guitar riffs and orchestrated strings swirl over a looped four-on-the-floor that pronounce disco house\u2019s revenge.\u00a0 Paying homage to his beloved hometown roots, DJ Pierre closes the party.\u00a0 The time reads 3:30 am.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cWhew, what a night.\u00a0 I reek of smoke.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cMe too.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe smell is all over my clothes.\u00a0 Not to mention trapped in my hair.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI hear ya.\u00a0 Although, I must admit, this event was worth every cigarette smoked.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
