The City That Abandoned Funky House<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bye bye.\u00a0 The city\u2019s funky house music days are done.\u00a0 For a city that is too busy partying, it sure does know how to kill a scene.\u00a0 Namely, funky house music, the sub-genre of house music.\u00a0 For those that missed funky house music\u2019s obituary and its home-going service in this city, please, read on.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Obituary<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Our beloved funky house music transitioned to the heavens.\u00a0 The music that once captured devoted hearts and lifelong fans in this city may be gone but its memories will never be forgotten.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Funky house music was the life of the party.\u00a0 However, its sound was no one-man show but a contemporary that was influenced by the unexpected.\u00a0 Its friends; boogie, disco, funk and R n B all contributed to its song.\u00a0 Vocals, television theme shows and rap lyrics performed its message.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Funky\u2019s love for electronic synthesizers, heavy samples and soulful bass lines defined its character and established its charisma.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Birthed on Chicago\u2019s North Side during the decade of excess, funky house was one of house music\u2019s many children-ghetto house, juke house and acid house-to birth during the cities electronica renaissance. The noughties secured funky house music\u2019s global popularity thanks, in part, to the westward expansion of Chicago\u2019s house music DJs and America\u2019s rave culture.\u00a0 Funky hosue music continued its reign throughout the close of the twentieth century and into the early twenty-first century until it retreated into fragmented territories.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Funky house music lived; edgy, energetically, vibrantly and full of life.\u00a0 It paid no relevance to playing it safe or ever slowing down.\u00a0 Its heartbeat pumped at 125 to 130 beats per minute.\u00a0 Its pulse marched to the beat of its own drum loops of build-ups and breaks downs that resembled a kick-ass rollercoaster ride of drama.\u00a0 This rollercoaster ride of drama is what kept many of players out dancing all night and playing its song till the wee hours of the morning light.\u00a0 Much can be said for its demise however, one fact is certain, funky house music was loved.\u00a0 Its sound is survived by parent house music and siblings, soulful house, and deep house.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Funeral Service<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Can you hear the music?\u00a0 When the single frame door with a putrid black paint job opened, an upbeat melody with pronounced four counts announced its presence.\u00a0 The merry melody escaped captivity.\u00a0 It blew outdoors where it froze in below freezing temperatures on the coldest night of the year of the snake.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Up the stairs, \u201cPlease Stand By,\u201d pass the lovely money collector, \u201cHi!!!\u201d, pass the ID checker, \u201cYes, I\u2019m older than 21\u201d and around the corner\u2026..<\/strong><\/p>\n

Startled!?!\u00a0 The scene appeared to be a funeral that no one bothered to attend.\u00a0 What happened?\u00a0 Invites were distributed. \u00a0Social media websites visibly \u00a0promoted the event.\u00a0 Yet, the faces of family expected to show played ghost.\u00a0 The majority of the few faces, present, appeared frighteningly unfamiliar.\u00a0 Had funky house music a mistress with relatives no one knew?\u00a0 Damn funeral surprises.\u00a0 Not surprisingly, the few supporters in attendance were scattered across the room. Only a handful bothered to dance.\u00a0 A quick head count revealed only twenty bodies on the dance floor.\u00a0 Throughout the room, the empty pockets of space outnumbered the guests. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The stage was set.\u00a0 Literally.\u00a0 The sound system had moved from the catacomb in the room\u2019s rear to center stage, in the front of the room, sitting in a coffin on a table.\u00a0 The change of set-up occurred to accommodate two 18 speaker bottoms and a fog machine.\u00a0 The fog machine sprayed the room as a faint whiff of carcinogens roamed by.\u00a0 Shining underneath one of the two disco balls, the position of the coffin proved noteworthy.\u00a0 Funky house music seemed to nod with approval.\u00a0 Additional space onstage meant greater crowd intimacy and allowed the crowd greater voyeurism.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0DJ Mike Zarin, dressed in vintage 4Deep garb, rocked the casket of equipment energetically with a funky house tribute not heard from him since his early 4Deep days playing at Connect parties.\u00a0 How appropriate, Tranzlife\u2019s \u201cHeart Attack<\/a>\u201d played soundtrack to the grief- stricken fiasco.\u00a0 At least two supporters tried to make the best of the situation, responding with handclaps and out of this world dance moves.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The hour hand ticked ever so closer to midnight.\u00a0 The bug that buzzes with excitement dropped dead.\u00a0\u00a0 Without hype and little fanfare, the event\u2019s guest headliner appeared onstage wearing a suave black leather jacket that would later come off to reveal two sleeves of tribal tats.\u00a0 The man appeared armed and dangerous.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The guest DJ, from southern California, bio reads like a champion of funky proportions.\u00a0 The \u201cTime To Get Ill\u201d mixtape producer is responsible for putting funky house music on the map in the east coast cities of Baltimore and Washington D.C. alongside then partner DJ Scott Henry during house music\u2019s heyday in the 1990\u2019s.\u00a0 His production and remix credits include a who\u2019s who list in the electronic dance world that spans decades and garnered hundreds of fans.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Currently, his name is Charles Feelgood<\/a>,\u00a0yet a few remembered when he was simply, \u201cFeelgood.\u201d \u00a0To make the people feel good is what the maestro set out to do.\u00a0 For the two hours that followed, Charles Feelgood would deliver nothing short than a stellar musical eulogy to his soul buddy number one, funky house. \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong>Enter the band Rufus & vocalist Chaka Kahn singing \u201cAny Love\u201d that partied over a bed of sliced disco house that ascended to heavenly heights.\u00a0 A few that recognized the classic showed love with vocal praise.\u00a0 Jamaroquai stopped by. The blue-eyed soul delivered the funk with \u201cAll Good In The Hood.\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0Bay area bred, Oakland, CA fed, DJ Mes<\/a> provided disco-drenched beats that bumped and wobbled not only the subwoofers, but dancing feet.\u00a0 Rescue\u2019s mega-hit, \u201cEvery Freakin\u2019 Day<\/a>,\u201d that samples 1990\u2019s R n B legends, Jodeci\u2019s, \u201cEvery Freakin\u2019 Night\u201d proved too predictable during the tribute.\u00a0 Feelgood\u2019s D.C. buddies, 95 North\u2019s alias, Johnny Corporate stopped by.\u00a0 Their song \u201cSunday Shoutin,\u2019<\/a>\u201d that samples Atlanta\u2019s own Brick, \u201cLiving From The Mind,\u201d put the church into the house.\u00a0 People shouted and danced.\u00a0 This spectacle would generate the most action the dance floor would see for the rest of the night.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Stop!\u00a0 The four-on-the-floor gave way for a slower urban groove as guitar strings plucked over softer drums.\u00a0 The red carpet was rolled out and the velvet rope pulled back for reality television\u2019s latest diva, Toni Braxton\u2019s \u201cYou\u2019re Makin Me High.\u201d\u00a0 The 1995 Atlanta-brewed jam felt underappreciated and went unnoticed.\u00a0 The dance floor\u2019s census dropped, twelve to five.\u00a0 Feelgood brought his hype men.\u00a0 A man, standing over six feet, stood onstage and played music director with animated arm thrusts leading the crowd to sing Stevie Wonder\u2019s \u201cDo I Do.\u201d\u00a0 The 1982 scorcher, and the party\u2019s \u201cThat\u2019s my song,\u201d played at high speeds, minus a house beat, with the song\u2019s original drums and percussions left intact.\u00a0 Certain segments of the song were looped for dramatic effects.\u00a0 The re-edits only miss, Dizzy Gillespie\u2019s arousing trumpet solo.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Again disco, George Benson\u2019s \u201cGive Me The Night\u201d (Instrumental), constructed the groove to funky house beats.\u00a0 Orchestra strings and blaring trumpets dotted the landscape of funky house\u2019s grandmother the late, disco.\u00a0 Fragmented vocals sliced in syncopated sound bites created a heated disco chant.\u00a0 Basically, Diana Ross\u2019 vocals sung \u201cBurnin\u201d over and over and over again.\u00a0 Next Feelgood dropped the music to allow the vocals to play.\u00a0 This is a DJ\u2019s non-verbal cue for the audience to sing along.<\/em>\u00a0 The late Whitney Houston sung. \u201cI Wanna Dance With Somebody\/With Somebody Who Loves Me.\u201d\u00a0 The dispersing crowd showed no love.\u00a0 More or less they seemed clueless.\u00a0 The late icon, MJ\u2019s chops were chopped on \u201cRock With You.\u201d\u00a0 The song was a floor burner equipped with hard core analog thumps that played proud and loud but Mike\u2019s vocals abruptly disappeared without any reason.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Teddy Pendergrass \u201cGet Up, Get Down\u201d uplifted the party.\u00a0 The late legend sang, \u201cDo You Want To Party?\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Over walked a drunken female.\u00a0 \u201cC\u2019mon dance,\u201d she slurred.\u00a0 By the end of Feelgood\u2019s set her ass would smack the wooden dance floor.\u00a0 Oops.\u00a0 Yes, everyone would see it.\u00a0 And sorry, no one would care to help her up.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

By two am, the handful of scattered few danced around like there was no problem or care in the world.\u00a0 Actually, everyone felt good and drunk.\u00a0 One person took being intoxicated too far; a woman dressed in a black blouse with black lace trimmings and blue denim had her head smashed down on the table asleep.\u00a0 Sign of the times: funky house music was dead, at least in this city.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Somewhere in the arms of time, the motto: for the love of funky house music, died.\u00a0 As one pallbearer stated, \u201cWe tried.\u201d\u00a0 In the city too busy complaining, \u201cWhere is the funky house music and I feel like some funky house music tonight,\u201d all one can do is to try.\u00a0 Sadly, in the end trying was not enough.\u00a0 The music sub-genre that once carried, through life\u2019s joys and pains, on its back a family of loved supporters, dancers and DJs bothered not to show face or support.\u00a0 Guess they bothered not to read the writing on the wall.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
