It\u2019s Black Saturday<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

at the Boutique House of Afrique Electrique!!!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The digital thermometer reads a brutal 28\u00b0 Celsius on the coldest night of the season.\u00a0 The semi-empty street breathes wanted warmth as a few brave diehards straggle into brick abodes.\u00a0 Upon approach of the Boutique House, that is Space2, the soundtrack of \u201coonze, oonze, oonze\u201d rattles the venue\u2019s steel frame that pronounces it is party time.\u00a0 After all, it is Black Saturday, a time to dance. \u00a0Sadly, not to be found is a line of dancers or a line of dancers standing down the street or even a line of dancers wrapped around the building.\u00a0 Even indoors there is no overly aggressive mob that tramples afoot to bombard the dance space.\u00a0 Instead, the room\u2019s heat warms two cold hands as they hand over two Lincolns to pay the door admission.\u00a0 A glance around the stripped space reveals a handful of beating heartbeats that pump to four-count thumps as a bartender stands bored waiting to serve a Blackfoot Confederate, or something<\/em>, to guests as the DJ nods and plays music.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Off to a quiet start, it\u2019s the four year anniversary of Afrique Electrique the vision of the city\u2019s uber-producer, DJ, singer, and songwriter extraordinaire Salah Ananse.\u00a0 The party that since conceived has hosted an eclectic clientele with esoteric music palettes.\u00a0 Surely tonight has been a celebration in the making for years.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Before the anniversary\u2019s main event<\/span><\/strong>, DJ Salah Ananse<\/a> serenades the growing crowd with exclusive door busters from the likes of Frank Ocean\u2019s \u201cThinking About You\u201d (Boddhi Satva Mix) one of the season\u2019s must haves.\u00a0 People mad rush and snatch up vocalist Erin Leah\u2019s mutated jazzy neo-soul vibe on<\/span><\/strong> \u201cRadio Billie Stereo Ella<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0 Superstar Black Coffee featuring Soulstar\u2019s latest,<\/span><\/strong> \u201cRock My World\u201d<\/a>, and Francophile Arnaud D with Heidi Voquel\u2019s<\/span><\/strong> \u201dGreen & Yellow\u201d<\/a> come wrapped in bushwa treatment.\u00a0 It\u2019s all about the British production duo the Layabouts with American Portia Monique on vocal lead that has the crowd singing<\/span><\/strong> \u201cDo Better.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0 Even Baltimore\u2019s young sensation LeRoyal presented by DJ Spen, offers<\/span><\/strong> \u201cDo You Have It?\u201d<\/a> (Maurice Joshua Mix)<\/span><\/strong> as dancers gather from far and near to \u201cGet It.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Up next\u2026wait one minute!\u00a0 Is that the party\u2019s exclusive goodie?!? \u00a0Yes!!! Dancers get ready because Black Saturday\u2019s main event is set to commence!\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s the timeless Josh Milan, formerly of the music group Blaze, onstage.\u00a0\u00a0 Josh, with hair in twisties and a BLAZE tattoo that travels up his left arm, sports a red Honeycomb tee on top of blue denim, stands ready to make it rain with musical must haves on conspicuous ears.\u00a0 The first gift up for grabs is the world renowned vocalist\u2019s promo<\/span><\/strong> \u201cFrom Now On<\/a>\u201d (DJ Spen & N\u2019Dinga Gaba Mix) that sells out to the sound of ching-chings.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

A quarter past midnight the room is abuzz with activity.\u00a0 People stand around with Moscow Mules in hand, people plop against the wall to hold it up, beautiful women dance against the wall, one male dancer dances with incense in hand that masks the smell of tuna, and a dance circle crops mid-room as dancers in front of the makeshift DJ stage go hysteric.\u00a0 Onstage local DJs smile and pose for snapshots.\u00a0 An army of wide-eyes besieged by guiltless expressions try to enter the backdoor free of charge but are stopped short by the gatekeepers.\u00a0 As the music gets better the crowd becomes livelier.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The<\/span><\/strong> \u201cWish<\/a>\u201d singer delivers a house head\u2019s musical wish list.\u00a0 There is Germany\u2019s Ralf Gum and Japan\u2019s Namy on digital layaway.\u00a0 But, Josh offers a two for the price of one guarantee that doubles the fun.\u00a0 Double Monique Bingham, the jazzy vocalist with<\/span> <\/strong>\u201cPoor People<\/a>\u201d and<\/span><\/strong> \u201cKissing Strangers<\/a>\u201d (Feliciano Vocal Mix).\u00a0 <\/span>Double Kerri Chandler with two classics,<\/span><\/strong> \u201cRain<\/a>\u201d and<\/span><\/strong> \u201cBar A Thym<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0 Honor two of Atlanta, Georgia\u2019s peaches, Avery Sunshine\u2019s<\/span><\/strong> \u201cUgly Party Of Me<\/a>\u201d (Terry Hunter\u2019s Bang Mix) and Robin Latimore\u2019s<\/span><\/strong> \u201cFirst To Say Goodbye<\/a>\u201d who by the way is in the house seated on a bench as she receives a shout out from Josh.<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 Even the party\u2019s guest DJ that doubles as a phenomenal vocalist doubles himself.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The five hour event\u2019s Blue Light Special jumps off when the Honeycomb Recording Label head drops his number one smash<\/span><\/strong> \u201cThinking About Your Body<\/a>\u201d (Louie Vega Dance Ritual Mix) that causes pandemonium to percolate the room over like Tickle Me Elmo flying off store shelves or accusers lining up to get a piece of the puppeteer\u2019s pie.\u00a0 Pure Fiyah!\u00a0 The crowd gobbles up goo gobs of Dennis Ferrer\u2019s featuring the vocals of the late K.T. Brooks on<\/span> <\/strong>\u201cHow Do I Let Go<\/a>?\u201d\u00a0 Actually, the dancers have no issues of letting go of a few extra pounds put on by gravy covered fowl, starched stuffing and ham hock collards two days prior.<\/em>\u00a0 Other must haves include Natalie Cole\u2019s electrifying cover of Michael Frank\u2019s \u201cTell Me All About It\u201d (White Label Mix) that has people stampede onto the dance floor.<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 The Queen of Gospel ENRG, Dawn Tallman\u2019s<\/span><\/strong> \u201cYou Are Why<\/a>\u201d follows Kerri Chandler\u2019s \u201cBar A Tyme\u201d that proves to be a diamond in the rough as the vocals sound muffled underneath the wallop of the two tracks playing at the same time.\u00a0 Nonetheless, it doesn\u2019t stop those who are in the know for stopping for a moment to offer up heavenly praise.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Within the event\u2019s final hour, through hazy eyes, the Boutique House appears disheveled, a bit like H&M after Versace merchandise sold out at the store.\u00a0 A whiff of cannabis whirls from the right corner near the front of the DJ stage that may or may not provide a contact high.\u00a0 The once mid-size crowd tapers off to a minute army of foot soldiers as hardcore dancers and fanatic fans remain; screaming, singing and doing their thing as Josh transitions from house music to afro-beat, psychedelic funk, 1980\u2019s R&B-one \u201chand stand\u201d dancer throws his arms up in the air in disgust to the adorable Stevie Wonder\u2019s \u201cAnother Star\u201d for interrupting his dance flow right before he storms out of the room- before ending in 1973 with \u201cDancing Machine\u201d by the Jacksons.\u00a0 At 3 am the music stops-or is it after 3 am<\/em>?\u00a0 Who cares?\u00a0 And who\u2019s sober enough to note?\u00a0 It is time to bid adios.\u00a0 \u201c\u00a1Uno Mas!\u201d A handful of stragglers yell not wanting to leave.\u00a0 So Salah Ananse throws out to the crowd one last, gracias, tune to the ire of the sound technician ready to jolt.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Wait one moment, no Blaze?\u00a0 The newly established solo artist seemed to trade in his Blaze catalog for his Honeycomb label efforts.\u00a0 Also missing, Afro-house seemed pawned for the deep sounds of east coast house.\u00a0 However, the three hour spirited DJ showcase, traversed by like a twenty minute shopping spree, kept the musical consumers coming back for more and wanting more.\u00a0 Although, Josh did not grace the room with live vocals or a solo performance he won over some tough critics and proved that he possesses more than a pretty voice and that \u201cFrom Now On\u201d you will know that he is a minister of music with mad DJ skills.\u00a0 Cheers to Afrique Electrique!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
